WHY MOST ATHLETES PLATEAU (AND HOW TO ACTUALLY GET FASTER) speed and jump training for athletes to run faster and jump higher
Why Practice Alone Stops Working After a While
If you or your child has been playing a sport seriously for a year or two, you have probably noticed something. Skills keep improving slowly, but speed and explosiveness seem stuck. The same sprint time. The same vertical jump. No matter how many extra practice sessions get added.
This is one of the most common frustrations we hear from athletes and parents at OneBreath Fitness, and there is a simple reason behind it.
Practicing a Sport Is Not the Same as Training for It
Cricket practice makes you better at cricket skills. Football practice makes you better at football skills. But neither one is specifically designed to make your legs more explosive, your sprint mechanics more efficient, or your body more resistant to injury.
That is a completely separate discipline called Strength and Conditioning, or S&C. It is what professional sports teams use to develop athletic qualities that skill practice alone cannot build.
What Actually Moves the Needle
Three things consistently make the biggest difference for athletes trying to break through a speed or power plateau.
Proper sprint mechanics. Most athletes, even talented ones, run with technical inefficiencies that quietly cap their top speed. Small corrections in arm drive, ground contact, and posture often unlock speed that was already there.
Explosive strength training. Plyometrics and structured power work teach the nervous system to produce force faster. This is what actually translates to a higher vertical jump or a quicker first step, not just running more.
Progressive overload with recovery. Plateaus often happen because training intensity never increases in a structured way, or because there is no recovery built in to let adaptation actually happen.
Why This Matters More for Young Athletes
The earlier an athlete builds a real athletic foundation, the longer runway they have to keep improving. Athletes who only ever practice their sport tend to plateau by their mid teens. Athletes who train both skill and physical qualities together tend to keep progressing for years longer.

How OneBreath Approaches This
The Jump Higher Run Faster program is a 12 week online Strength and Conditioning plan built specifically around sprint speed, jump height, and explosive power. Sessions are live, one on one, with a certified coach who has a national level athletics background. No generic templates. Every plan is built around the athlete's current level and sport.
This works for cricket, football, basketball, volleyball, and track athletes alike, since the underlying physical qualities, speed, power, and mechanics, carry over across every sport.
If progress has stalled despite consistent practice, the gap is usually not effort. It is the missing physical training underneath the skill work.
